This Week's Podcast: Covenant Theology and Romans 9

On today's program, I answered a couple of listener questions. First I talked about the use of the term "consubstantiation" and why Lutherans don't use it, and then I answered a question about covenant theology and the Lutheran law/gospel hermeneutic. I then continued our discussion of predestination, looking at Romans 8 and 9. Listen here.

  1. Hi Jordan,

Another great podcast. I normally prefer to read articles than to listen to podcasts but yours is an exception.

Your explanation - on why Lutherans dislike being associated with consubstantiation, and the differences in Lutheran and Reformed hermeneutics and preaching emphasis, Covenant theology - is simply awesome! Never heard it articulated so clearly. Your exegetical discussion on Romans 8-9 was also very helpful. Paul is talking about who is Israel, the meaning of "foreknowing" in Rom 8:29, the hardening of Pharoah's heart and what is the Paul driving at in Romans 9-11.

    Thank for the great job!

    Martin

  2. Have you read Dr. Stoeckhardt's commentary on Romans 9? I think you'd find it interesting. Much better than Lenski's as he doesn't take the easy way by essentially dismissing election as the Bible lays it out.

  3. David- I have not, but I will look into it. Lenski's interpretation is disappointing.

  4. Jordan,

I appreciate your discussion on Covenant Theology, you clearly have a firm grasp on the issue. However, as someone who hold to Covenant Theology, I'm a little confused by how you believe law/gospel can be set as an alternative. So, if you don't mind, I have a couple of questions. In what context besides covenant do you believe the law and the gospel exist? What is the purpose of the covenants in the Lutheran view? Thanks.
