On today's program, I addressed the Mark Driscoll fiasco and the underlying issues of celebrity culture within evangelicalism. I addressed the recent controversies surrounding both Mark Driscoll and Ergun Caner, and how they reflect a dangerous ecclesiology inherent in contemporary evangelicalism.
That guy looks more like a wrestler than a pastor :-)

I think you did a great job of laying out how ecclesiology supports the celebrity status. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI think the real fiasco is that an overgrown teenager like Mark Driscoll could become a popular preacher in the first place. Setting up gurus is bad enough, but when people like this are the gurus, things have gotten very bad indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this, Jordan.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all...I truly appreciate your podcast. It is my favorite to listen as I run, walk, ride. However, I feel as if you conflated two issues here. I am in agreement with the idea that it is dangerous to not have ecclesiastical supervision as many in the "megachurches" do not have. However, I don't know if this is an issue of the "megachurch" and worship style. Indeed many "mainline" churches have allowed great straying from true doctrine with ecclesiastical supervision.
